Apart from being able to say my great- grandmother, Sabina Bell, was Irish and had spent time in Pennsylvania, there was not much more to say. I did get to copy details from all certificates they had and I collected some photographs, but most of my information has been built up over my personal research at libraries and registrar offices over the past few years.
Having decided to commit my research in a way to share it with my family. I have begun these newsletters which I hope will inspire more family stories, photographs etc. to be shared
Most of our ancestors are either Irish or are Ayrshire born and bred So l will begin by sharing the history of the Bell family.
THE BELL'S IN AYRSHIRE
James Bell is first noted in Ayrshire in the 1841 census return. He is a twenty-year old coal miner living in Street, St.Quivox. He was one of five foreigners living there. Foreigners just meant not of that country.
James was born around 1820 in Carlisle to James Bell and Agnes Robertson. James met and married Margaret Milisops on 12 Mar 1848. Their first child, William circa 1849, was named after his brother William, who was living with them at that time. Another son born 1853, was named after' Margaret's father, Jackson. The Bell family then moved to Irvine where a daughter Agnes was born in 1855. Soon after they moved to Dreghorn.
James was working for the Bourtreehill Coal Co., who supplied them with housing at Corsehill Square. (This is in the area now known as Springside).
Seven children were born here:
James 1857, Hugh 1860, John 1862, John Christie 1864, Georgina Taylor 1868, Thomas Lindsay 1870 and Robert 1873. Of their ten children only four survived.
John was only 9 months old when he died from water on the brain. This would have caused him to be drowsy and irritable and his head would have swollen.
In 1866 James died of typhoid fever. This is caused by ingesting contaminated food or water. He was 8 years old. Eighteen months later, fifteen year old Jackson died of typhus fever - a rash and fever spread by body lice. As we can see living conditions at the Corsehill were not good. Poor sanitation and ventilation spread disease.
Thomas died next, he was only three, and cause of death was disease of the brain. Two years later, 1876, another three year old, Robert, died. He died of diphtheria, an infectious disease among children. In 1882, John Christie Bell died aged seventeen from tuberculosis. So as we can see, the Bell family suffered great losses.
The surviving four all married locally. William lost his first wife Mary after childbirth and went on to marry Christina Rubie. Agnes married James McLaughlin, and Georgina married Peter Orr.
Hugh married Mary McCarroll in 1881, they had fourteen children before she died in 1902 from rheumatic fever at Broomlands Row, Irvine where the family lived for a while. In 1903 Hugh married widow Sabina Burke, who had two children of her own. Hugh and Sabina had three sons of their own: Robert, Harry and George. Robert was my grandfather.
The date of James Bell's birth has varied from 1813-1829. He appears to have lived at the Corsehill all his time in Dreghorn. On 29 September 1900 he died after suffering bronchitis and chronic diarrhoea for three days. His son registered the death and gave his father's age as 87.
His widow, Margaret, died on 30 May 1911 after suffering erysipelas for six days (an inflammation of the skin). Her age was given as 72 years, but she was born in 1829, making her 82 years.
The burial register for the Old Churchyard in Dreghorn has the deaths of James in 1866 to John Christie in 1882 listed. So I am not sure what happened to the first John in 1863.
KBG
HUGH BELL 1860-1924
Hugh Bell was born 29 March 1860 to James and Margaret Bell. Any schooling he received he would have got at home. On 16 September 1881 he married Mary McCarroll, the daughter of a neighbouring coal miner.
The 1861 census for Dreghorn shows they too lived at the Corsehill Square. They had six children: Maggie, Agnes, William, James, Hugh and Nelly.
A search through the birth registers of Dreghom showed the following children: Jane 1891, Charles McKerrel 1893 both born at the Corsehill. Twin girls born 1895, both died as they were premature and John 1896 at Station Row. Now we move to Irvine. Mary Aird Bell was born 1898 at the Black Row; William McCarrol Bell and Andrew Currie Bell were born 1900 and 1902 at Broomlands Row. After the death of Mary, Hugh had to find a wife to mother his large family. On 23 November 1903 at Ayr county buildings, he married Sabina McMananiion Burke. They settled at Station Row in Dreghorn.
What happened to Hugh and Mary's children I have not yet found out. One son. Hugh, was killed in the First World War. The only one I knew of was John. John named Madge (Margaret Stewart) and they had three children - Hugh, Eleanor and Stewart Madge died in 1981 just as I was about to see her regarding information on her family.
Hugh and Sabina's eldest son, Robert McMenemy Bell was born 16 September 1904 at the Corsehill. On 8 February 1935 he married Isabella Welsh Morgan , they were married at her family home of 2 Wyllie Place, Stewarton. The Morgans used to live at Bankhead, Dreghorn. Robert and Isabella had three children , Hugh, Thomas Morgan and Jean Lindsay (the latter two named after Isa's parents).
This family moved from Station Row (which was prone to flooding in bad weather) to The Globe, a council house in Dreghorn.
Hugh Bell died on 17 December 1924 from carcinoma of the stomach, at Townhead, Dreghorn. Sabina died from chronic myocarditis on 2 May 1948, she still lived at Station Row. They are remembered on a gravestone in Dreghom Cemetery, the double lair was bought by Sabina She also buried her son George there. George Bogle Bell died at the Kilmarnock Infirmary on 18 November 1937, he was 28 years old. George was a coal miner and on that day he was struck by a runaway hutch which fractured his skull.
My dad has many fond memories of his grandmother. He told me often how he would run to her if he got in trouble from his parents. I wish I had a picture of Hugh Bell just to see how he compares to my grandpa and dad. Maybe someone out there has one. Sabina is pictured above with grandsons Hugh (right) and George (left-son of Harry).
The Corsehill is long gone, the area is now the separate village of Springside.
THE END OF THE LINE
On 7 August 1963 at 129 Main Street Dreghorn, I was born to Hugh and Mary Bell. My sister Jacqueline was 11 months old and we lived in a one bedroom flat. In 1966 we moved to 23 Milton Crescent and Marilyn, Dad's 10 year old daughter by his first wife, came to live with us. Marilyn had been living with our grand-parents at the Glebe up until then. Our family was complete in 1970 with the birth of my brother Stuart
We all went to Dreghorn Primary school which was built in 1904 and we were the third generation to be educated there.
Marilyn left home in 1972 to start a family. Jacqueline moved to Reading, England in 1986 to be with her fiancée, they married and have three children. Stuart left home in 1997 to move to a flat in East Broomlands. I moved to a one bedroom flat in 1993 and married
Craig Gilliland that November. We had Rebecca in April 1996 and moved to a house in Ford Avenue, Dreghorn in May this year.
Unfortunately I lost my father to cancer in June 1995 and he was buried in the family lair in Dreghorn. Mum shill lives in Milton Crescent
My Gran Isabella died of a heart attack in 1975 and my grandpa, Robert died in 1992, from prostate cancer. They were cremated at Masonhill, Ayr.
I belong to the fifth generation of Bells in Dreghorn, Stuart is a banker in Glasgow with aims to move there, so we disappear.

A daughter Elizabeth was born that same year, followed by William in1824, John Anderson in 1827 (born in the Gorbals), Margaret in 1829, James in 1831 and Jackson in 1835.
Jackson was a coal miner born around 1801, seemingly in Ayr, but this has not been established as there is no family presence at that time in Ayr.
It seems likely that he was of Irish origin. There are a few records of Millsop/Millsoap/Milsops etc in Ayr in the early 1820 to 1860s and there is only one listing of the name in the present day in our area. In Ireland the name is found in Co. Arrnagh and Co. Tyrone. In America the name is wide-spread, especially using the Milsaps spelling.
In St Quivox, in the 1841 census was another family, that of Samuel and Helen Milsoap. Samuel was 63 years of age and his wife 35 (perhaps this was meant to be 53 as she is a widow 10 years later aged 63). They were both from Ireland as was their 19 year old daughter Agnes. Their other children were Martha, Margaret, Samuel, William and Sarah born between 1827 to 1836 in Maybole. It seems likely that Jackson and Samuel are related.
In the Ayr Old Parish Records there is a lone entry for the death of 69 year old Margaret Milisap on 5 May 1825, wife of labourer Samuel Millsap. Cause of death was presumed as the decay of nature.
So could this Samuel and Margaret be the parents of Samuel and Jackson? It would mean that my great great grand-mother Margaret (daughter of Jackson) was named after the aforementioned Margaret Johnstone. It is a puzzle and my research will continue until I can verify some facts. By 1881 all traces of the known Millsop ancestors have gone. My guess was that the family emigrated to America and only this past week has that been verified.
There is no trace of Jackson and Taylor after 1841, I can only presume that Jackson died. Taylor on the other hand may have remarried as there is another marriage entry for a Taylor Anderson to Hugh Bradley in Dundonald in 1847. If this is not our Taylor then it is certainly a relative of hers.
So here lies my future research. Wish me luck.
KBG
It was not until the 1841 census return that I discovered that Jackson and Taylor had another daughter, Elizabeth was the first born and she was given as 19 years of age. She probably married soon after that, but I have yet to find out to whom.
WILLIAM was born 12 March 1824 in St. Quivox and Newton, he was a coalminer and married Jean Begnall on 9 February 1845. The couple moved to Kilmarnock where in 1851 brothers Jackson and James are living with them, they were all miners. (Jackson and Taylor most likely died by this time). William and Jean had no children, but in the 1861 census at Auchinleck, they have as adopted daughter Mary McCallum, she is 13 years old and was also born in St.Quivox. But, who was she? It has come to my attention that they eventually had two sons of their own. William born 1860 (but did this baby survive) and George Roy Milisop most likely born in the early 1860s.
JOHN was christened on 5 August 1827 in the Gorbals, Lanark. I had no trace of him and considered him an infant death until it came to light that the John Anderson I was noting as a relative to Taylor was indeed her son, John Anderson Millsop. John married Mary Ballentine on 13 February 1852 in Irvine. A daughter Isabelle was born 1853, New Cumnock; Taylor Anderson, 1855 Irvine; Mary, 1858 Auchinleck; Elizabeth, 1861 in England; Jean Ballentine, 1862 Auchinleck. It would appear that two of these daughters, Taylor and Elizabeth did not survive.
MARGARET was born 14 May 1829 in St.Quivox parish, she married James Bell (who had arrived in Ayr from England) on 12 March 1848 and this Scottish family are outlined in Volume 1, Issue 1 of Family Roots.
JAMES was born 15 October 1831, St. Quivox and Newton, a coal miner he married Anne Ives Muir on 31 July 1853. That same year Jennette was born, followed by Ann Ives in 1855, Irvine; Taylor Anderson in 1857, Auchinleck (also known as Georgina Jen Tylia) was christened in 1860 in York-shire. Elizabeth followed in 1859 and Jackson in 1862; Finally John in 1864, Auchinleck. I could not find this family in the 1861 census.
JACKSON was born 18 May 1835 in St. Quivox & Newton, another coalminer he married Jane McDonald on 3 March 1854, Kilmarnock. Martha was born in 1855 and Jane in 1857 in Auchinleck; William 1859 in Riccarton, Kilmarnock, and John in 1862 back in Auchinleck.
Thus the Ayrshire born Millsops disappear, all four sons leave the land of their birth behind to start a new life in America.
KBG
My hunch about the family emigrating was proven to be correct, I discovered the family tree for a Candy Millsop in America and her ancestors turned out to be the Millsop brothers. Here is what she told me about them.
The family story goes that one of the brothers was found to be teaching the miners how to read and write, this was frowned upon and he had to leave, his brothers followed him out there in the coming years.
William found work as a miner, he and Jean had no more children. Their son George Roy married Mary M. McCormick and they had a family in Sharon, Pennsylvania.
John Anderson is the ancestor of Candy Millsop. John left for America after 1862, a son William was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1867 followed by James Anderson (whose son John born in 1892 was killed in 1918 in France serving his country. John was a Sergeant in the 58th Infantry), Elizabeth, Anna, Quinton Ballentine and Georgina Tyler in Bethol, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. A large fam-ily thrived from this line of the family. John was a miner too and he died on 8 January 1899 in the Pine Township, Pennsylvania.
Janes J. is missing from the 1861 census which made me wonder if he was the first brother to go to America, however he and Ann (or Anna as she is known in America) are last recorded in Auchinleck in 1864. They had a son Hugh in 1867 at Briar Hill, Mahoning Co. Younstown, Ohio followed by Clara Jane in 1969 Bethol, Mercer Co. Two more chil-dren James and William James completed the fam-ily. James was a saloon keeper in Ohio, he died on 17 August 1896 in Sharpsville, Mercer Co.
Jackson too was a miner he emigrated sometime from 1862. A son Francis was born 1865 in Pennsylvania followed by Mary and Jackson W. The family then went to Youngstown, Ohio where James H, Elizabeth G, Edward and Annie were born, I think Annie did not survive for there are no further details on her. Jackson died on 17 October 1883 in Youngstown.
So as you can see there has been and still is a vast family of Millsop cousins in America. 'thank you Candy.
